It is important to exercise common sense while using oxygen. Patients should not cook on an open flame and should be careful that the oxygen does not come in contact with hot burners, pots, pans or anything that could cause the plastic tubing to melt. Most importantly, patients should not smoke and should not allow anyone else to smoke within five feet of themselves or the oxygen equipment. "No Smoking" signs should be posted as a reminder. Electrical appliances that get hot or spark should also be kept five feet away from the oxygen system.
